With the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft just hours away, several members of the KU baseball team ready themselves to be selected by major league organizations.
The draft, which will air its first round on the new MLB Network, begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday evening with the opening three rounds of picks. The second day of selections (rounds 4-30) will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, while the final rounds (31-50) will be conducted on Thursday, starting at 11:30 a.m. Players who have enrolled in a four-year institution may not be selected until they have completed their third season at the school, meaning just a handful of Jayhawks from this year's squad are eligible to be drafted. They include: Shaeffer Hall, a junior left-handed pitcher from Lee's Summit, Mo., who tossed the fifth no-hitter in team history on Feb. 20 against Air Force. Hall was KU's Friday night starter last season, going 5-6 with a 4.18 ERA. He was the first Jayhawk to tally multiple complete game shutouts in a season since Pete Smart in 2000. Hall's three complete games were a team high, while his walks-per-nine innings rate (0.97) led the Big 12. Hall was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention pick as well as an academic all-conference selection. Preston Land, a senior first baseman from Greenwood, Mo., blasted an important three-run homer against Missouri at Kauffman Stadium on April 22 and played superb defense at first base for the Jayhawks. Land hit .222 in 57 games this season with eight doubles, three homers and 21 RBIs. He also drew 23 walks to record a .340 on-base percentage.
Now the junior starter from Lee Summit, Mo., will be in the driver’s seat this season after throwing a no-hitter Friday afternoon against Air Force. “That was a remarkable feat, he was absolutely outstanding,” coach Ritch Price said. “He was in command of all four pitchers and ahead in the count.” Hall said the last time he threw a no-hitter was his junior year in high school. This one understandably meant a little more to Hall, but maintaining a modest and humble approach.

The last time Shaeffer Hall threw a no-hitter, he was just beginning to drive.
