Windows_Update_IconMicrosoft Patch Tuesday, it's a big one

Microsoft released a larger than usual batch of security updates this past Tuesday.  In it's biggest Tuesday upodate bundle since 2008, Microsft pushed 10 Security Updates to patch some serious bugs in Windows, Internet Explorer, Word and Excel. Six of the ten were marked as "critical", Microsofts highest threat ranking. Three of the updates are marked as "Moderate" and one marked as "Important".

Does free antivirus offer a false feeling of security?

Earlier this month, Symantec’s product manager David Hall dismissed free security software as equal alternative to the paid versions, and also described  Microsoft’s free “Microsoft Security Essentials” as “a stripped down version of the OneCare product Microsoft pulled from retail shelves“.

Needless to  say that such statements from a competing vendor often come as a direct frontal attack against the alternative solution, however, they also fuel the debate on whether or not free antivirus offers a false feeling of security.

The answer? Let the data, and a bit of a common sense speak for itself.

Antivirus software is not the solution, antivirus software is part of the (defense in-depth) solution

A few years back, social networking (SN) was just for kids. Sites such as MySpace and Facebook were used primarily by teenagers and college students to interact with friends. Now as we approach the second decade of the twenty-first century, social networking has grown up and entered the mainstream. Everybody who’s anybody has at least dabbled in it, and the demographics are definitely changing. I recently received a Facebook “friend” request from an 88-year-old lady, and she is by no means the only senior citizen on my friends list. Other friends include 20something family members and at least one 18-year-old who’s a fan of my newsletters, as well as numerous colleagues in the tech industry, folks from high school, several aunts and cousins, and quite a few people I worked with in my law enforcement days.
