Colorado-based Rio National Insurance Group has selected Lee’s Summit for its first Midwest regional service office. The company recently leased 3,000 square feet of the Bank of the West building on NW Blue Parkway in Lee’s Summit. This new Midwest regional office will handle marketing, customer service, claim adjustment and product management for Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. The growing insurance group plans to hire 20 people each year for the next five years, ultimately reaching 100 employees.

“The Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council is pleased to welcome Rio National Insurance Group to our community,” says Jim Devine, President and CEO of LSEDC. “Rio selected the Kansas City area because of lower operating costs and specifically chose Lee’s Summit for its high-quality workforce — and we had a building available that fit their needs. Rio will contribute to the diversified tax base and bring quality jobs to Lee’s Summit for many years to come.”

Despite the struggling economy, Lee's Summit has seen a surge of retail development. Two anchor stores, Macy's and JCPenney's are among the new Summit Fair Development.

The city council approved a $9 million bridge loan. That money has kept development on schedule. Macy's and JCPenney's are scheduled to open July 31.

"We'll be hiring almost 200 people," said Amy Noonan. "And many of them are from Lee's Summit. So we're pretty excited about that."

Summit Fair is 5000,000 square feet. It's located at 470 and 50 Hwy and many hope it will boost the economy.
