A little known secret is that every TLD (top level domain, as in .com, .org, .net, and so on) essentially has the same provider. For instance, the most used domain, .com, is provided under infastructure from Verisign. No matter who you give your money to, Verisign provides the support to keep your .com working.
The only difference, then, is how much you pay companies like Strother Web Solutions to facilitate your registrations and renewals.
In July of 2011, Verisign raised the cost of registration for a .com TLD to $7.85 per year. To cover our costs, we charge $8.99 for a .com domain registration. Of that, we send $7.85 to Verisign.
So no matter what provider you use, be it GoDaddy, Network Solutions, or Strother Web Solutions, your service for a .com domain is provided by Verisign. The only difference is price!
